Washington, DC – On 16 December 2016, Bruce Simon from SURVICE’s Corporate Business Development Group met with (then) U.S. Senate-Elect Chris Van Hollen (D-MD). The purpose of the meeting, which was held in the Dirksen Senate Office Building in Washington, DC, was to congratulate Senator-Elect Van Hollen on his recent election and to discuss various legislative issues affecting Maryland military installations (particularly Aberdeen Proving Ground [APG]), Maryland’s contractor community, and the overall Defense industry.
Mr. Van Hollen has represented Maryland’s 8th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2002, serving as the ranking member of the House Budget Committee, a member of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, and a member of numerous caucuses. He will now be assuming various new leadership roles in the Senate, including chairing the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and serving on the Senate Appropriations Committee.
During the meeting, Mr. Simon and Senator-Elect Van Hollen discussed the challenges and future of sequestration and continuing resolutions, the integration of advanced technologies into DoD organizations and operations, the future of the Small Business Innovation Research program, the sustainment/growth of the Defense testing infrastructure (particularly in Maryland), and plans to address the aging hazardous facilities at APG and elsewhere.
